John Lewis Way in Nashville after former U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hume-Fogg High School senior Safiyah Suara, the daughter of at-large Metro Council member Zulfat Suara, organized the rally at the Metro Historic Courthouse Plaza, drawing all ages including a number of students and a mix of ethnic backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have such a passion as an advocate not only for John Lewis, but everything that he represented as well when it comes to the environment and people and for folks that haven\u2019t been invested in as much,\u201d said Davidson Academy junior Adrienne Gott, who read a poem as one of several speakers at the rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=810%2C608&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=431%2C323&amp;ssl=1 431w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?resize=862%2C647&amp;ssl=1 862w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tennesseetexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/john.webp?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Hundreds gather to protest renaming portion of John Lewis Way to Donald Trump Blvd in Nashville, TN.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albert Thompkins, junior at Fisk University where Lewis attended quoted Lewis in his address: &#8220;Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble,\u201d Thompkins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis feels as if it was a push and attempt to erase part of Black history that is important to us,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, and Sen. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, introduced the bill to rename parts of the street to President Donald Trump Boulevard. The bill seeks to rename the portion of the roadway between Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Boulevard and James Robertson Parkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/02\/18\/PNAS\/e3fb2984-484f-44a9-bb1b-4ae76c51f9df-LEWIS_RALLY_5.jpg?w=810&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fisk University student Albert Thompkins speaks at a rally to protest a bill  that seeks to rename a part of John Lewis Way in Nashville after Donald Trump on Feb. 18, 2023.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStay in your lanes\u201d and \u201cthis is not your city,\u201d was part of a recorded poem that Safiyah Suara played for the crowd. The poem was written for the rally by Alora Young, who Safiyah said was unable to attend the rally.&#8221;No Trump Blvd.,&#8221; and &#8220;Hands Off Nashville&#8221; and &#8220;Save John Lewis Way&#8221; were among signs displayed at the rally. \u201cYou would give a man in a place he isn\u2019t wanted an honor he hasn\u2019t earned,\u201d Safiyah also recited from the poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewis&nbsp;was known as a civil rights trailblazer, who led lunch counter sit-ins in Nashville and was one of the original Freedom Riders, who went on to be a Democratic member of Congress from Georgia. Lewis attended&nbsp;what&#8217;s now American Baptist College and Fisk in Nashville. Lewis died&nbsp;July 17, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the state is trying to demean and diminish a Tennessee hero, John Lewis,&#8221; said Larry Woods, 78, a TSU professor and attorney, who remembers witnessing conflicts during the civil rights movement in Nashville as a youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/02\/18\/PNAS\/c2e81212-cac7-4745-8798-b9e9cd9d368c-LEWIS_RALLY_1.jpg?w=810&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"People gather at a rally in Nashville to protest a bill that seeks to rename a part of John Lewis Way after Donald Trump on Feb. 18, 2023.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renaming a portion of Fifth Avenue&nbsp;after Lewis was approved by the Metro Council in November 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zulfat Suara chaired the Rep. John Lewis Way committee ahead of the Metro Council&#8217;s approval to rename the stretch after the civil rights leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJohn Lewis was so important to Nashville,\u201d State Rep. Brenda Gilmore, D-Nashville said. \u201cHe actually marched on Fifth Avenue North, that\u2019s the significance of that street.
