San Antonio, TX—<\/strong>For over two decades, under the watchful eye of Coach Robert Hughes, the road to the state tournament went through Ft. Worth Dunbar Flying Wildcats. During this period numerous players left the program to make impacts on NCAA schools around the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonight one of those players, 4-year starter and team general at the point was Derrick Daniels. Tonight the State of Texas made it official, Daniels is inducted into the Texas High School Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hi-Flying Wildcats impact was felt around the country. Generating legendary status to Dunbar high school and Fort Worth in particular. For four years Derrick Daniels was as at the helm of the Wildcat attack overseen by legendary coach Robert Hughes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his four years as a starter, the Flying Wildcats went 125-20, with 10 of those losses coming during his freshman year. He led Dunbar to a 104-10 record for the next three years. In his four years as a starter, they won four consecutive District Championships and two Regional Championships and made two State Tournament appearances. Daniels was named the District\u2019s Newcomer of the Year as a ninth grader. Daniels’ approach to his team as a servant. “As a point guard, not only are you a leader of the team but you are a servant, states Daniels. And I’m gonna be a servant til I the day that I die.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All-District four times, All-Region three times, All-State three times, All-State Tournament two times, District MVP, Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, and All-American. He scored 1,560 points, with 500 rebounds, 510 steals and 1,379 assists in his career. After graduation, he went on to become a four-year starter at the University of Houston, where he led the Southwest Conference in assists all four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniels reflections on his career credits basketball with teaching him life – skills that will last far beyond the hardwood. “What stands out the most is not the records. Not the assists.
