“Memphis needs a mayor who knows law enforcement.” Floyd Bonner

Memphis, Tennessee—The streets were a buzz for some time in Memphis. Rumors can now be put to rest. Sheriff Floyd Bonner officially announced, on Tuesday, he’s running for Mayor of Memphis. After serving two-terms as sheriff Bonner is no stranger to Memphis and its even stranger politics. Sheriff Bonner shared with partisan attendees his birth rights in Orange Mound and modeled himself after his father who was also a Memphis police officer.

Like most political pursuant’s in this country his platform is built on reducing crime and economic development. A two-term sheriff Bonner emphasized his roots in the city, including his days growing up in Orange Mound and watching his father, a Memphis police officer, go to work. Bonner graduated from Fairley High School in Whitehaven. Climbing the ranks of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner was appointed chief deputy in 2015 and won election in 2018.

A questionable cloud of residency is hanging over the candidates campaign. The Bonners live in Bartlett and live in a house that they’ve owned since 1994. Bonner decided to move his family from Whitehaven to Shelby County due to his work as an undercover narcotics officer.

“We are going to be looking to get back into the city limits of Memphis and we have no problem moving back into the city. We are empty-nesters,” Bonner said. “It will be a house that I will sleep at every night. It’s not going to be one of these shell-game types.”
