While It Last-Get Your Blue Bell Summer Blend

The Brenham-based creamery is making the most of blackberry and peach season.

Brenham,TX—Just as temperatures rise higher than the depths of Hades Blue Bell has come to cool us down. The Brenham-based creamery brought back a slate of flavors for the summer: Oatmeal Cream Pie, Southern Blackberry Cobbler and Peaches and Homemade Vanilla, all three for a limited time is available in selected stores.

The flavors have a long history, with the Peaches and Homemade Vanilla first debuting in 1975. Decades later, Blue Bell continues to resurrect the flavor while peach season carries on through mid-August.

The Southern Blackberry Cobbler is a newer addition that arrived in 2007. In some ways, it steps up the fruity flavor of Blue Bell’s peaches and vanilla by including flaky pie crusts and a blackberry sauce swirl. Similar to peaches, the flavor is especially fitting for this time of year while blackberry season continues through mid-June.

Some Blue Bell fans have shared hope that the creamery would give the peaches and vanilla flavor the same kind of treatment they’ve given to blackberries so it could resemble a peach cobbler. At least for now, ice cream lovers will have to make do with mixing in their own pie crusts, as Blue Bell has not indicated plans to mess with the peaches and vanilla.

Oatmeal Cream Pie, meanwhile, is a treat made for those who desire cookies over pie in their ice cream. The recipe involves oatmeal-flavored ice cream with hints of brown sugar mixed with soft oatmeal cookies and a vanilla icing swirl.

It’s the newest of the flavors since it first reached stores in 2022 during National Ice Cream Month in July. At the time, Jimmy Lawhorn, Blue Bell’s vice president of sales and marketing, mentioned how closely it tasted like the snack cake popularized by Little Debbie.  “It is just like eating a homemade oatmeal cream pie, but in ice cream form,” Lawhorn said.

The flavor can be found in pint and half-gallon sizes while the other two are only available in a half-gallon size. And if this sweet and fruity flavor profile isn’t your favorite, there are lots of other ice cream flavors to choose from, including the company’s recently released A&W Root Beer Float Ice Cream.

Personally this writer will be lobbying for the comeback of White Chocolate Almond for the winter blend in all sizes.
